Missed out on the recent Logs End eZine? Here is a quick summary of our article, which detailed how to prevent hardwood floor gaps.
With winter in full force, our homes are being heated twenty-four hours a day. The air becomes dry, drawing out the moisture from your hardwood floors. This causes the floor to contract, and gaps begin to appear between planks. While technically hardwood floor gaps are considered normal, home owners should attempt to reduce their occurrence.
Monitor Humidity Levels
The team at Logs End suggests using a digital humidity gauge, especially during the winter months. Hardwood floors do best when the home humidity level is kept between 40% and 60%. Should the levels drop below this range, floor gaps become apparent.
Increase Humidity Levels
If you need to increase humidity in your home, the easiest solution is a portable humidifier. These devices are typically small and compact, and can be moved from room to room.
In the event you heat your home with a wood burning stove or fireplace, invest in a cast iron steamer or humidifier. Shaped like teapots, bowls or animals, these devices are designed to hold a decent amount of water. Once placed on top of your stove or fireplace, the escaping steam adds moisture to your home.
